The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99) require that all Radiation Employers appoint (in writing)
and consult suitable Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) to advise and assist them in compliance with the
regulations.
- A Radiation Protection Adviser is an individual who
holds a valid Certificate of Competence from an
assessing body recognised by the Health and Safety
Executive. At present the only such body is RPA2000.
- Holding a Certificate of Competence does not, in
itself make the holder a suitable RPA for a particular
employer to consult. It is only a recognition of core
competence. Radiation employers will need to satisfy
themselves that the RPA also possesses appropriate
knowledge and experience relevant to the employer's
particular working conditions.
Neil Pierce has over 25 years experience of practical
radiation protection.
- radiography
- scintigraphy

Neil holds
- a Masters Degree in radiation protection
- the RPA2000 Certificate of Competence to be a Radiation Protection Adviser
An RPA needs to be consulted with regard to:
- Prior Risk Assessments
- Compliance with relevant legislation
- Drawing up of local rules and schemes of work
- Required Dosimetry
- Training of Radiation Protection Supervisors and staff
